Inside, wrapped in oilcloth and protected from the flood damage, they find a small wooden box. Inside the box: Mara’s notebook, the folded notes she'd left between gears, and a single photograph of the child from the package, now annotated on the back with a list of names and short phrases—"Joan—song," "Theo—map," "Asha—river."
