The first season of The Ones Who Live served as an emotional apex for the franchise, successfully reuniting Rick Grimes and Michonne while dismantling the immediate threat of the Civic Republic Military (CRM). However, several factors suggest that a second season is not only viable but narratively rich: The Ones Who Live gave us something rare:

The CRM is 110,000 strong with multiple cities (Cascadia, Omaha's remnants). Season 1 killed the top generals, but the middle command remains. Season 2 could explore a power vacuum, leading to a civil war that threatens to spill out into the surviving independent communities. Rick would be forced to return to stop a genocide campaign.
Season 1 ended with Rick and Michonne successfully dismantling the Civic Republic's brutal leadership (specifically Lieutenant Colonel Okafor and Major General Beale), but they did not destroy the CRM. Instead, they blew up the Echelon Briefing, exposed the "Axis Mundi" conspiracy, and secured a ceasefire. They returned to the Commonwealth to reunite with Judith and RJ, ending the season on a beach with a phone call.
